Investigate

Investigate was the first step that I have ever done in the MYP Design cycle which made it very hard to do. I have never learned DT before in my life and it has been a new experience for me. The first Unit was called "Emergency Shelter" and we had to make a emergency shelter for one particular place that we have decided. I decided the very populous, China. There are a lot of floods happening so I decided to make a emergency shelter specifically for the people of China.

The most important things that we did for Investigate is making the design brief and doing the specification for our investigation. Previously, we did research on Design briefs and Specifications to find out exactly what they were and how they were written.  First of all, the design brief is as it called a design briefing. We talk a little about our model in a summary. Second, the specification is when we have to make brief descriptions about points that we want our product to include. For example, some of my points for the specification was target market, functions, and materials. In my opinion without a hard solid investigation, you cannot do good in the rest of the stages in the MYP design cycle. The steps inside Investigation and the things that I wrote in them were:

1) Introduction: I introduced about my product and what it was going to be used for. In this case I introduced that I am going to make a emergency shelter for the Chinesse people because they tend to get more floods.

2) Brainstorming of Potential Problems to be solved: This part is when you list the problems that you think you are going to face when you are building your product. I wrote that I worried about Location, money, and materials.

3) Problem Definition + Choice of Client and Audience: In this part we had to tell who our audience and client was. I said that my audience was the people of China.

4) Brainstorming of Possible Solutions / Products: This is when we think of solutions for the problems that we listed.

5) Client Interview: I interviewed my mother as a client and asked her about what things should be added to my emergency shelter to make it better.

6) Choice of product: The choice of product is why choosing my product is best.

7) Case Study: The case study is when we have to pick 3 designs of already existing emergency shelters and pick out ideas from each of them.

8) Materials, Tools, Techniques, Resources Investigation: In this part of Investigation, we had to research about the different parts and tools that you are going to use to make your emergency shelter.

9) Design brief: This is when you write a summary about what you are going to make.

10) Specification: As mention in the previous paragraph this is when you make points and say how they apply to your emergency shelter or the product that you are making.

When I was doing the Investigated I had a lot of problems since it was my first time doing Design Technology. However because Mr. Thorburn gave us a lot of sources that we can use, I managed to get alone fine. It was a good experience for me.
